TERROR BY NIGHT (aka The Secret Witness, 1931) Una Merkel, William Collier Jr., Zasu Pitts, Nat Pendleton. A rich, philandering husband is found murdered in his posh penthouse apartment. At one point, all the lights go out and a suspect is found shot. The police arrest the wrong man, but the neighbor below figures out who did it and the trick weapon used for the crime. #FH48

MURDER AT DAWN (1932) Jack Mulhall, Josephine Dunn, Mischa Auer. In a mysterious mountain hideaway, a mad professor works on a death ray! Weird Gothic Westerns

UNDER TEXAS SKIES (1930) Bob Custer, Bill Cody, Lane Chandler, Tom London. A very rare, very bizarre Western thriller that's definitely in the "Forgotten Horrors" vein. Custer, Cody, and Chandler play a trio of cowboys out to thwart villain London. Featured is an ape-like, mute giant who sadistically beats up Cody and keeps him hostage for most of the movie. The creature's scenes are shot with a "horrific" lighting style to add to his menace. #W186

MYSTERY RANCH (1932) George O'Brien, Cecilia Parker, Roy Stewart, Charles Middleton, Noble Johnson. A horror-Western if there ever was one! Very Gothic, even Germanic. Middleton is unforgettable as a maniacal ranch baron who considers himself lord of his region. O'Brien is the lawman sent to stop his schemes. Johnson is memorable as "Mudo," Middleton's monstrous henchman. Dark, creepy, and intenseÑrecommended! #W248

HIDDEN VALLEY (1932) Bob Steele, Gertrude Messinger, Francis McDonald. Bob are an old professor are in search of "Hidden Valley," which, according to legend, is home to an ancient treasure and a lost tribe of skull-worshipping Indians. Before they can find the valley, the professor is murdered and his secret map is stolen. Bob is arrested and convicted of the murder. DESERT PHANTOM (1935) Johnny Mack Brown, Sheila Mannors, Ted Adams, Karl Hackett, Nelson McDowell, Charlie King. Johnny comes to a mysterious ranch where a phantom killer has murdered six ranch hands. The ranch is inhabited by a helpless cripple and a young girl. Johnny eventually trails the killer to a mineshaft where he almost plunges to his death. Lots of dark and creepy scenes! #W117

BORDER PHANTOM (1937) Bob Steele, Harley Wood, Don Barclay. A scientist is found murdered near the Mexican border; his niece is kidnapped. She's later rescued by two cowboys, only to find herself blamed for the murder.
